Galveston is rich with history, gay-friendly beaches, and plenty of places to eat, drink, and be merry. Whether you’re just visiting or you call Houston home, the quick trip down I-45 is a great option for escaping the H-Town hustle and bustle to soak up some sun and island vibes.

Where to Stay

Grand Galvez

Renowned as the “Queen of the Gulf”, the Grand Galvez is a AAA 4-diamond property established in 1911. Plucked straight out of a Wes Anderson film, the historic hotel is the beachfront hotel for visitors looking for an elevated stay in Galveston. The elegant and classic vibe and design of the space create a romantic space with modern sophistication. With tranquil room accommodations, a luxurious spa, and a host of food and beverage options, the Grand Galvez is certainly a sight to behold and a perfect option for a scenic island getaway.

Hotel Lucine

A brand new boutique hotel a mere 30 yards from the beach located along Seawall Blvd. offers a picturesque, upscale oasis for visitors and locals alike. Hotel Lucine absolutely lives up to its nickname, “The Best Little Beach House in Texas”. The laidback hotel comes complete with gorgeous accommodations, a heated pool (perfect for year round enjoyment), private room patios, a rooftop bar, and plenty of events to keep guests entertained, such as live music and yoga. Dinner and drinks are served at The Fancy, the hotel’s self-proclaimed American “fine-ish dining” establishment that features a perfectly curated menu of light bites (the salmon toast is a must) and mains, along with desserts that you will want to be sure to leave room for. Book your stay or make a reservation for your day trip to the island today and fall in love with your new home away from home!

If you’re looking for something more lowkey, yet still comfortable and high-quality, consider staying at Hilton Galveston Island Resort, Holiday Inn Resort Galveston, or Country Inn & Suites by Radisson, Galveston Beach, TX.

Where to Party

Galveston may not have as many gay bars as Houston, but the island destination still has haunts that are geared toward the LGBTQ+ community.

23rd Street Station Piano Bar

23rd Street Station Piano Bar is the long-running bar that is open to all. Dueling pianos, sing-a-longs, karaoke, and an old school lounge vibe make this Galveston staple a great spot to enjoy some live entertainment and cocktails.

Robert’s Lafitte positions itself as “Galveston's original drag show bar, and the oldest LGBT bar in the state of Texas”. All are welcome and are treated as family when they walk through the doors at the historic and humble bar. The fully stocked bar, indoor and outdoor space, plethora of drag entertainment, and tropical vibes make it a unique experience for queer folks to let loose. Watch your step, because Lafitte features a pool located right outside the bar!

Located right across from the beach, Island Time Beach Bar & Grill is a place for all. With a calendar packed with happy hour specials, karaoke, drag shows, drag bingo, and so much more, Island Time is a perfect place to grab a drink with friends on their expansive patio deck and enjoy some unique entertainment!
