It’s true, when you think of Houston, you don’t often think about ice-skating. However, for ten years downtown’s Discovery Green has been transforming it’s Kinder Lake into an ice rink fit for a queen. Rainbow on Ice, an annual LGBTQ celebration on January 11, will put that theory to the test.
Rainbow on Ice is in its tenth year of inviting the LGBTQ community and families to string up their skates and take a few laps around the rink. Although the icy fun is open to the general public through January 21, this particular night is specifically geared to invite and entertain Houston’s LGBTQ community. It will feature DJs and Drag Queens from around the city for a unique experience during the chilliest times of the year.
LGBTQ Houston’s favorite DJ, Joe Ross, will be spinning the latest hits for event-goers to skate too. If you like to move to the music while you skate, take caution, Houstonians aren’t know for our ice-skating capabilities. Don’t be surprised if you see a few tumbles as people bop to Beyonce.
The event will also showcase some of the city’s best drag talent as well. Drag tributes to Ariana Grande’s latest video, “Thank U, Next” are planned. If you do happen to take a spill you can rest your bruised bum (and ego) while you enjoy some real queens on ice.
If you don’t happen to be a fan of ice-skating, the rest of the park will be open for folks who might want to get some hot cocoa or a cool cocktail. Make plans to eat at The Grove or any of the other surrounding convention district restaurants after you’ve worked up an appetite. While your friends take to the ice enjoy the temporary art installation “GUST” only a few feet away on the Andrea and Bill White Promenade.
The event is free to the public but skating fees will apply. The event starts at 7 p.m. and ends at 11 p.m. If you’d like to buy tickets beforehand online you can do so here.
