Beginning in August 1998, Unhinged Productions began producing professionally staged plays affirming the lives of people in Houston’s LGBT community. Using live theater to create an emotional connection with the audience and to give a voice to the community, the company is recognized for raising awareness on social issues though its high-quality alternative work.
Presenting a mix of new plays by local writers and performers, Unhinged’s work often mixes humor with experiences relating to discrimination, prejudice and individuality. In one irreverent example, the company presents the retelling of the Old Testament by Adam and Steve. In another, Unhinged tackles the national debate on same-sex marriage with its team of artists.
In addition to well-priced regular performances, the non-profit organization hosts free theater workshops and play readings throughout the year.
