The Menil Drawing Institute

The Menil Drawing Institute was established in 2008 in recognition of drawing’s centrality in the lives of artists and its crucial role in modern and contemporary artistic culture. The building, which opened in 2018, is the only standalone facility in the United States dedicated to the exhibition, research, and conservation of modern and contemporary drawings. The award-winning design was conceived by Los Angeles-based architecture firm Johnston Marklee and features a trio of spacious courtyards and steel canopies that modulate daylight in a way that both illuminates and protects delicate works on paper.
