A group of independent restaurant and bar owners have launched a unique concept--a bar where 100 percent of the proceeds are donated to charity.
The Organized Kollaboration on Restaurant Affairs, or OKRA, opened the OKRA Charity Saloon in late 2012. Located near historic Market Square Park in the former Red Cat Jazz Cafe, the saloon is hoping to draw more nightlife patrons to the northern end of Downtown.
The concept is simple: For each drink purchased, guests receive one vote that they may cast that night for one of four selected charities. The charity with the most votes at the end of the month receives that month's proceeds. Interested charities submit applications on the OKRA website.
Much like the bars and restaurants involved in OKRA--including Anvil Bar & Refuge, Poison Girl and Grand Prize Bar--the OKRA Charity Saloon will feature a well-edited spirit selection, emphasize local brews and industry favorites, and include a small collaborative food program from the group’s culinary members that include Revival Market, Oxheart and Paulie's.
