After more than a century of service in Houston’s East End, change is on the horizon for Gus Wortham Golf Course. Set along Brays Bayou, just minutes from Downtown, the course once served as home to the Houston Country Club and remains the oldest 18-hole course in Texas.

In February 2016, the Houston Golf Association raised $5 million to take over the course from the City of Houston. Now, the group aims to raise another $10 million to build a 12,000-square-foot clubhouse, conference center, cart storage and offices, along with make improvements to parking and course grounds.

Houston-based golf course builder Heritage Links has been tapped for the project, while Finger Dye Spann Inc. is responsible for the design. Restoration of the course is expected to be complete by the end of 2017 with the facility construction on track for a July 2019 opening.

Currently, the golf course features a fully-stocked Pro Shop, full driving range, putting and chipping greens and a practice bunker. Enthusiasts wanting to play at the facility will appreciate the course’s challenging, elevated tees and uphill carries that encourage users to put all of their clubs to the test.
