The Texas summer usually gets a head start compared to our friends in the more northern parts of the county. While they are still packing up their winter wear we are well into tank-top and bikini season and headed to our sister city on the third coast, Galveston. We also get a head start on celebrating Pride at the annual Galveston Pride Beach Bash!
First things first, Plan your accommodations so your not left out in the streets. The Tremont House is a fun and fashionable place for visitors to stay. Another historical and gay friendly hotel is the Galvez. This place is known for its historic looks and haunted rooms. If a resort experience is more your style then the San Luis Resort might be the best option for you. For more general information about your trip to the island check out the MGH Guide to Galveston.
This year Pride Galveston takes place June 7 - 9. For native Houstonians we know this is well into the sunny summer season and the proof is in the traffic on I-45 headed south. You may want to plan in advance if you are visiting and get on the road early to max out the sunshine and enjoy the tropical nights. It may even be best to arrive Friday evening and head to the Piano Lounge at 23rd Street Station, for LGBTQ singalong and the Mister and Miss Pride Galveston Pageant.
Saturday is when the actual Beach Bash is. Head to the RA Apffel East Beach Park and find your people. The sun is hot in June so bring an umbrella or a pop-up tent and join the temporary gayborhood that is set up. Then take a dip and meet your neighbors! Then take a quick disco nap and head to Robert’s Lafitte for some drag entertainment.
Sunday will rap up the fun weekend with a Pool Party at noon at Roberts LAfitte and then if you don’t have to be back until later a final sing-a-long at 23rd Street Station. ON your way home you may notice some old Victorian mansions like Bishop’s Palace. There’s nothing like ending an epic weekend with a little history as well.
