The 28,000-square-foot home that would become known as the Moody Mansion was built in 1895. Businessman W.L. Moody purchased the sprawling Broadway St. estate just days after the historic 1900 Galveston hurricane.
Over the decades Moody and his wife raised their four children there and the home remained in the family until 1986. The Moody business empire included everything from cotton to hotels. The family legacy continues on Galveston, where many organizations, nonprofits and attractions bear the Moody name.
Today, guests at Moody Mansion can take a guided tour of the opulent home, which showcases in detail how one of the most powerful families in Texas lived at the turn of the century. From the ornate ballroom to the sweeping veranda for the Moody children and grandchildren once played, the tour is a tribute to a bygone era.
