Katz's Deli & Bar

713-521-3838
616 Westheimer Rd | Houston, TX 77006

Late-night noshers purr over this all-hours Montrose eatery with a city-slick atmosphere.

Crave blintzes at midnight or corned beef and cabbage at sunrise? This is your place. Cops from next door rub shoulders with families, politicos and all walks of colorful Montrose life at this brick-paved double-decker.

The trademark Reuben will please you, with its fleshy stack of peppery pastrami, melted Swiss and zippy-sweet Russian dressing. Matzo ball soup is as soothing as your grandmother's. Potato pancakes? Swoon material. Nevertheless, New York cheesecake is always on. If you can't commit to a slice, slurp the killingly rich cheesecake shake. Beware: A full serving of cheesecake is whirled in.

Not to mention an update to the inside of Katz's. The look meshes old and new, creating an environment that fits the needs and wants of its loyal, late-night visitors. On the first floor, a custom brass Warbach chandelier in the bakery area, a tile mural at the front counter, a community table and a substantially expanded bar area. Then, patrons can head on upstairs to take a seat at the stone countertop stretching the length of the stair rail. Oh, and don't worry about needed a charger. The counter includes electronic charging stations.

Owner Barry Katz comes from a lineage of butchers. Get your hands around the 20-plus hefty, kosher-style sandwiches or daily specials like Yankee pot roast and meat loaf.
