We can all agree that Houston is by far the best city in the country. That is a fact. However, sometimes venturing outside the city limits, even if for a day, is therapeutic. You can some peace of mind and away from the same people you see out each weekend.

So pack your bags, get in your car and take a long weekend at one of these great spots that are closer than a few hours away.

Rainbow Ranch
Get your Brokeback Mountain on at this LGBT campground. Located not far out of Waco, this ranch has everything the great outdoors has to offer: cabins, fishing, canoes, nature trails and events all yearlong. After you go once, you won’t know how to quit it.

Austin
The state capital has more to offer than live music and college boys as far as the (brown) eye can see. Barton Springs and the clothing optional Hippie Hollow are great spots to escape the Texas heat. Also, Austin’s Splash Days, a nonprofit event benefiting the LGBT community in early September, is a staple party for all LGBT Texans.

Galveston
Feel the sand between your toes and the sun on your face in Galveston. This historic beach town is less than an hour away and boasts great shopping, historic sites and some of the best seafood. What more could you want?

Lake Daze
For those who love the water but hate the ocean (I am one of them and know there must be others out there) pack a cooler and get out on one of the lakes adjacent to Houston. Some of the largest include Lake Conroe, Lake Livingston and, of course, Lake Houston.

Lake Charles
Tell me one thing, are you feeling lucky? Girl because if you are, head to Lake Charles. For those that like to gamble, there are spots not far from Houston for you to see if Lady Luck is on your side.

Tube the Guadalupe River
The most popular tubing spot in Texas runs through the gorgeous Texas Hill Country, passing through San Marcos, New Braunfels, Gruene and San Antonio — all wonderful destinations. And if you are looking for another music fest to hit up this year, get your ticket to Float Fest, a musical festival that includes camping, river tubing and bands like Zedd, Weezer, MGMT and Passion Pit.

Dallas
The Houston/Dallas rivalry is real. So real, I almost didn’t include it. Instead, it is just last. However, Dallas does offer an exciting nightlife with popular bars like Round-Up and Station 4 all on the same strip.
