You might call her a night club superhero. Engineer by day, dance floor filling DJ by night. (And – to make things even more interesting – a barber on the side.) She’s a resident DJ at Pearl Bar Houston; the DJ for the social group L.O.C (Lesbian of Color); and a DJ for hire for all kinds of events, including the recent lesbian takeover in Galveston, Plezzure Island.

A Houstonian for five years now, DJ Rockabye came to H-Town when what she calls her “career job” in the engineering world moved her here. “I had never even been to Texas or even thought about moving here. I originally came to help out on a project and then they offered me position.” The rest, as they say, is history. She continues to work as an engineer. But, she says, “If I could just DJ or do something related to music, and own my own barbershop, I would.”

A triple threat like DJ Rockabye is certainly a perfect fit for a Vocal Local profile, especially since she is relatively new to town. Nothing like a new set of eyes to show off a city in a whole new light!

What’s your favorite thing about Houston?
My favorite thing about Houston is the diversity. I like the different cultures here. From a DJ perspective, I’ve gotten the chance to DJ everything from R&B to Hip Hop to Pop to African Pop to Latin Pop and so on.

What surprises you about Houston?
The food. Coming from up North, we don’t get all the fresh seafood choices. I love seafood!

Where is your favorite place to eat in Houston?
I don’t have a particular favorite place. I really like the Vietnamese restaurants and the various seafood restaurants here in Houston.

What is your favorite thing to do in Houston?
My favorite thing to do in Houston is to DJ at the different types of clubs. I love music. So my music library is quite extensive. So being able to DJ at different types of venues gives me the opportunity to spin various kinds of music music and not get stuck to one genre. I’m known for my mixing skill on the turntables. So it allows me to play to a diverse crowd.

How would you describe the queer community in Houston?
I feel like it’s very diverse. I do feel Houston is lacking when it comes to clubs for the lesbian community.

I think it’s important for lesbians to have their own clubs because the men always have somewhere to go and party and mingle. Being new to Houston, it has been hard to meet women because of the limited clubs or social scenes.

What is your favorite queer event in Houston?
Pride would be my favorite event. I enjoy Pride because it brings everyone out, even those that may not go to clubs. You get to meet and see people you may have never seen before.

What is the one piece of advice you’d give to a queer person coming to visit H Town?
You will see the community everywhere in Houston, which makes you feel more comfortable!

Some of us like to venture out to straight clubs and other events as well. So when you see others from the community at these places it makes you feel more at ease.
